The Veg heads are an on-going series of personal illustration work. The first iteration was inspired equally by a serious conversation about despression and from a much lighter day harvesting giant cabbage heads from my father’s vegetable patch. Since that first attempt four or five years ago, I collect visuals of unusual fruit, vegetables and flowers when I see them and return to them at times when I need to escape a current stress or require the pure enjoyment of image making.
The hyper-real representations of organic material are contrasted intentionally against flat figures, most often representations of young children or past lovers. Background colours are often chosen from small flecks within the illustration or as neutral compliments to the figures.
All drawings are sketched out first and then rendered from scratch using Photoshop and an Intuos Pro.
